I’m Sallie Melton, an Educator at East Riding of Yorkshire Council. I’ve worked for local authorities for over 20 years, with a background in IT training and experience in soft skills and management training. About two years ago, I transitioned to a full-time eLearning role, and this past Christmas, I received a promotion that I credit in part to the Associate Certificate in Instructional Design from the Digital Learning Institute.

Why I Chose the Digital Learning Institute

I’ve been creating eLearning since 2007, but I always felt like I lacked the structure and formal knowledge to confidently support my work. I wanted a course that was accredited and provided credible tools, models, and documentation. After struggling to find the right program for years, I discovered the DLI Certification course, and it was exactly what I needed.

How It Helped Me Succeed

The Certificate provided me with the structure I had been missing. It introduced me to tools like the ADDIE model, which I now use to confidently work with SMEs and develop effective learning materials. The documentation and templates from the course helped me excel during my promotion interview by allowing me to present ideas with confidence and clarity.

The support from the DLI team has been fantastic. Even after completing the course, I’ve been able to reach out to John Kilroy and the team for guidance. Their ongoing support sets DLI apart from other training organizations I’ve worked with.

Looking Ahead

I’m now pursuing the Professional Diploma in Digital Learning Design, which I’m thoroughly enjoying. I’m excited about expanding my skill set, especially in graphic design, as our team continues to grow. The Diploma is setting me up for even greater opportunities, whether within my current organization or elsewhere.

Sallie’s Advice for Aspiring Instructional Designers

If you’re considering a DLI course, just do it! The support, accreditation, and practical knowledge you’ll gain are invaluable. With the market for instructional design booming, having a robust qualification will set you apart. Don’t miss out on the chance to upskill and take your career to the next level.
