When researching options, the Digital Learning Institute stood out for its structured approach and real-world application.
"I enrolled in the Digital Learning Institute because I wanted to formalize my skills in instructional design. I was also looking to pivot careers and thought it was important to create a portfolio to show potential employers."
While enrolled, Gina worked in higher education as part of a team responsible for hiring seasonal employees. She immediately applied what she was learning in the program to improve their onboarding experience.
"I used the instructional design skills that I was learning in this program to create an engaging online asynchronous opportunity for our employees to learn the skills that we had identified they were lacking. And this has made all the difference for the employees who are overseeing the onboarding."
Through the program, she gained a deeper understanding of the design and development process and how to strategically approach each phase.
"I learned that the design and development process has multiple steps that are useful to think about independently of each other or one at a time. Even if an individual is wearing multiple hats, it's important to put on the right hat at the right time so that design happens before development. This has really improved the end result of my projects because I was thoughtfully engaged in the design process before I developed."
Earning a certificate in Digital Learning and Instructional Design gave Gina not only the skills but also the language and theoretical foundation to communicate effectively with other professionals in the field.
"The certificate gave me the language and the theory to be able to talk to other professionals in the field. I also leveraged the skills and projects from my workplace to create a portfolio to demonstrate my abilities to potential employers. Thanks to that portfolio, I just recently started my first job in the learning and development space."
Now, equipped with new skills, a strong portfolio, and a fresh career path, Gina is ready to make an impact in her new learning and development role as a Course Development Manager.
